What is Xeomin®?

It can be difficult to keep track of all of the injectable treatments that are available today! Xeomin has been around for some time but may not be quite as well known as the original injectable, Botox. In fact, the two are very similar. Like Botox®, Xeomin is made for dynamic wrinkles. It reduces these wrinkles via incobotulinumtoxinA.

How Does Xeomin® Work?

The botulinum toxin type A is a bacterium found in the natural environment. Its effects have been harnessed for clinical therapies for many years. The effect that this neurotoxin has is that it reduces the intensity of muscle contractions. Based on dosing, it can temporarily paralyze muscles as needed to improve comfort or, in the case of Xeomin, to reduce the cosmetic signs of aging.

When we inject a muscle with Xeomin, the purified ingredient blocks the muscle from receiving a vital chemical that causes it to contract. The relaxed muscle then no longer pulls on the skin, releasing frown lines from their permanent position for a prolonged period.

How is Xeomin® Different from Botox®?

When you look at Xeomin, it may seem like another form of Botox. This isn’t far off base. The two are made using the same base ingredient. However, there are differences that prevent the two from being interchangeable.

The most significant detail that differentiates Xeomin from Botox is that Xeomin is pure botulinum toxin type A. There are no accessory proteins added to it. Without the accessory proteins, there may be less of a risk of allergic reaction to the treatment. There is also less of a chance of developing antibodies to the bacterium. Studies have shown that some people who regularly receive Botox injections start producing antibodies to fight the neurotoxin’s effects. As a result, their results may not develop as well as they once did, nor last as long.

The number of units of Xeomin that are used to reduce frown lines may be comparable to the number of units of Botox that would be required. However, some studies suggest that the results of Xeomin can last longer. This is especially true for people who have become resistant to the effects of other neuromodulators.
