Anti-aging doesn’t have to come through a scalpel or a syringe. Sometimes, the answer to multiple cosmetic concerns lies in collagen induction. We are pleased to offer microneedling as a convenient and comfortable collagen induction therapy treatment.
Microneedling is a technique of treating the skin from the outside to stimulate collagen remodeling on the inside. This treatment follows the principle of dermal rolling, an effective but antiquated skin treatment that creates micro-injuries in the skin using a needle-clad drum. In the clinical setting, microneedling is conducted using an automated handpiece that drives adjustable needles just beneath the skin in a completely vertical manner. Each pulse of the applicator tip creates numerous tiny punctures with the ultra-fine needles, effectively inducing a healing response.
The healing response provoked by the creation of dozens of superficial micro-injuries involves collagen production. Collagen is the protein produced by fibroblast cells to support supple, firm skin. Collagen is also the body’s organic healing balm for cuts, scrapes, and scars. When an area of skin is covered in tiny pinprick injuries, the tissue is flooded with collagen. The influx rebuilds the matrix of collagen fibers which has become loose and slack due to age and sun damage. As a result, skin looks smoother, younger, and all-around healthier.
The collagen production that occurs after microneedling treatment improves just about every aspect of the skin. With a stronger, healthier collagen matrix beneath the surface, the skin becomes tighter and displays fewer lines and wrinkles. The texture of the skin smooths and pore size decreases. Stretch marks, scars, and the effects of UV damage also fade away.
Microneedling is generally safe and effective for most adults. This skin-boosting treatment is particularly beneficial for individuals with scarring from cystic acne that they would like to decrease. Aside from a desire to improve the appearance of the skin, it is only necessary that patients be free of infection in the area they wish to have treated.

Microneedling is a straightforward procedure that may commence after your skin is desensitized with a topical numbing cream that is left on for a few minutes. After the analgesic has had time to work, the skin is cleansed and treatment begins.
A small handpiece holds an applicator tip of tiny needles. This tip is moved across the skin while the needles vibrate up and down to penetrate the skin at a proper depth. Needles are adjustable to accommodate thick and thin skin types as well as the different areas of the face and body where there may be more or less fat between the epidermis and underlying bone structure. Because the applicator tip is automated, treatment goes by relatively quickly.
Microneedling does not cause anything more than mild discomfort. A topical analgesic may be used if you are concerned about comfort level.
The body begins its repair process immediately, but the full results of treatment may not be noticed for a few weeks. Initially, the skin may look red, like you stayed in the sun a little too long. You may notice tiny pinpoints from where the needles were inserted. Within a few hours, redness diminishes to a pink glow that lasts a day or two. Your skin may also feel slightly tight, tingly, or tender for the first 24 to 48 hours.
Microneedling increases cellular activity to produce more collagen in a localized area such as the face or neck. With more collagen to support it, the skin can appear plump, smooth, radiant, and also firmer. The appearance of fine lines may decrease and scars appear lighter through tissue regeneration.
Your provider will discuss how you should care for your skin after microneedling. Generally, patients are able to resume normal activities within a few hours after treatment because redness fades quickly. The primary instruction that providers give is to avoid sun exposure. UV light degrades collagen, so it is beneficial to use sunscreen and protect the skin from sunburns and tans long after microneedling has been performed.
One microneedling treatment provides several weeks of glowing, smooth skin. Depending on the extent of improvement you desire, you may wish to schedule a series of microneedling treatments. This technique can be performed monthly for a period of time. Each treatment enhances the production of collagen to achieve more dramatic improvements in the tone and texture of the skin. With a series of treatments and maintenance once or twice a year, it is possible to prolong the results of microneedling for years.
