What to Expect During and After a Fat Transfer Procedure
- Posted on: Sep 15 2024
Fat transfer, also known as fat grafting, is a popular cosmetic procedure that involves moving fat from one part of your body to another. This procedure can enhance your appearance by adding volume to areas such as your face, breasts, or hands.
If you’re considering a fat transfer, here’s what you can expect during and after the procedure.
During the Procedure
The fat transfer procedure typically begins with liposuction. Dr. Tarbet makes small incisions in the skin to perform the procedure and then uses a thin tube called a cannula to remove fat from areas like your abdomen, thighs, or flanks. After she removes the fat, it is processed to separate impurities and concentrate the viable fat cells.
Once the fat has been prepared, Dr. Tarbet injects it into the target area where you want to add volume. She administers the injections in small amounts to ensure a natural look. The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia. However, depending on the extent of the treatment and your comfort, sedation or general anesthesia may be used.
Recovery and Results
After your fat transfer, you may notice some swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort in the donor and recipient areas. This is normal and usually improves within a few weeks. Our team will give you detailed aftercare instructions to help with your recovery, including how to care for the treated areas and any medications to help with pain and swelling.
Most people can return to normal activities within a few days, but avoiding strenuous activities for a couple of weeks is best. Make sure you attend your scheduled follow-up visits to monitor your progress and ensure the results are as expected. The transferred fat usually settles in the new area over time, and you’ll see the final results after a few months.
